The Max Planck Schools are a joint research initiative between German universities and German research organisations. In particular, the Max Planck School of Photonics offers a novel PhD program for outstanding students who want to qualify for a career ranging from fundamental oriented up to applied photonic research. During a two year qualifying study phase at one of three teaching universities in Erlangen, Jena, or Karlsruhe, our participants benefit from a curriculum covering a broad range of photonic fundamentals but also specific subjects of late-breaking science. With the Master’s degree, the door to the PhD phase opens and students begin with their active research within the extended network of our Fellows in Aachen, Göttingen, Hamburg and Munich.

STPI’s Science Policy Fellowship Program



Overview

The Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI) is a congressionally chartered, Federally Funded Research and Development Center operated by the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA).

STPI provides independent analytical support to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other federal departments and agencies on science and technology (S&T) policy issues. The STPI Science Policy Fellowship Program provides recent bachelor’s or master’s degree recipients a unique opportunity to use their critical thinking and analytic skills to work on a diverse set of challenges in S&T policy areas, including space sciences, innovation and competitiveness, energy, health and life sciences, national security, biotechnology, information technologies, and STEM education.

Responsibilities

Fellows will work with teams of researchers to support a wide variety of S&T policy-related tasks. Duties may include conducting survey-based and interview-based research, database development, use of data visualization tools, use of statistical techniques, and other qualitative and quantitative methods to perform project-driven policy analysis. Fellows will have an opportunity to work on one independent research project that will contribute to the scientific, technical, or policy literature. Over the course of the two-year program, experiences will include:
Participation in analyses that support tasking from Federal Government policymakers
Interaction with OSTP and other Federal science agency personnel
Involvement in workshops and discussions on relevant topics
Mentorship from members of the STPI research staff
Training on specific analytical methods and tools
Attendance and presentation at select professional society meetings

Qualifications
This is a full time position and is only open to recent recipients of a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Candidates with degrees higher than a master’s degree will not be considered.
Candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree conferred between May 2017 and July 2019.
Candidates with degrees in engineering, life sciences, physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences, computer science, mathematical sciences, statistics, and learning sciences are encouraged to apply.
Candidates should possess a strong interest in science and technology policy, although previous policy experience is not required.
Candidates must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills, and will be asked to give a 30-minute presentation on a topic to be assigned during a group interview.
Ideal candidates are able to contribute to and support team efforts.

Job Summary

The Depth Hardware group at Apple develops depth-sensing hardware such as the revolutionary TrueDepth camera that powers FaceID. This multi-disciplinary group of engineers is responsible for architecture, research, and manufacturing development of these highly complex sensing systems for Apple products. The Depth Hardware team is seeking a Validation and Test engineer to help verify and validate Depth HW through ground-truth station development, opto-mechanical fixture design, benchmarking and analysis. Key Qualifications

  • Individual should have strong skills in the areas of sensor calibration, characterization, requirement verification, systems analysis, and organizational skills. The individual will be expected to learn concepts associated with depth sensors and work both independently and with a cross functional team to validate innovative solutions to challenging technical problems. FARO Technologies (www.faro.com) is seeking a capable, enthusiastic intern to work with our optical systems and electrical engineering R&D teams in Lake Mary, FL.  The intern(s) would support development of present and next-generation contactless laser line probes (LLPs), coordinate measurement machines (CMMs) and related optical imaging and metrology equipment.  The intern(s) can expect to contribute to design aspects such as emitter and detector comparison, selection, and evaluation; lens selection and characterization; imaging system design; optical system-level characterization; and development of algorithms.

Preferred attributes include the following:
·         Strong general knowledge of optical systems, including basic paraxial imaging system design, illumination & photometry principles, aberration effects, basic colorimetry, optical properties of materials, thin films, etc.
·         Understanding of semiconductor emitters (LEDs, edge emitting and VCSEL laser diodes) and detectors, including photodiodes, CMOS sensors, CCDs, etc.
·         Familiarity with optical and electrical measurement systems such as oscilloscopes, spectrometers, spectrophotometers, goniometers, integrating spheres, etc.
·         Programming experience (some experience with Matlab, Mathematica or similar software required; C/C++ or other object oriented programming experience a plus)
·         Familiarity with FPGAs, PCBs, and/or analog circuitry helpful
·         Competent and confident decision making skills, good communication, positive attitude and willingness to learn

Description

Tekcapital has an opening for an Electrical Engineer (EE) to work in our office in Miami, FL office. The EE will develop and build a prototype pair of augmented reality glasses that incorporate state of the art imaging technology. The EE will coordinate a team of optics experts and related disciplines to define the architecture, design the product work with a prototype development shop in order to meet contractual obligations. The EE will have a working knowledge of Electro-Mechanical and Electro-optical Designs and be able to work across platforms to communicate requirements to other team members. 

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze requirements, participate in defining, deriving and allocating hardware requirements;
  • Select components and suppliers to be used in the prototype development program.
  • Create documentation, as needed, to confirm design approach prior to implementation and to ensure clear and accurate communication of all design details needed to produce prototype products;
  • Create schematics, interconnects and designs using CAD;
  • Create part drawings, and Bills of Materials and testing procedures;
  • Coordinate optics experts for technology review and component selection;
  • Review hardware design with engineering and development team;
  • Coordinate the augmented reality glasses prototype development program;

Qualifications
