Winter School at Arizona

The College of Optical Sciences houses one of the largest and most comprehensive educational and research programs in optics & photonics. The goal of hosting the Optics and Photonics Winter School will be to give undergraduate students an overview of foundational areas in optics, and how they are related to specific fields of optics & photonics research, in hopes of encouraging more students to pursue a career in those fields. During each day of the Winter School, an introductory lecture will cover core material from a specific area of optics & photonics. The goal is to introduce key concepts and outline the curriculum necessary for a career in the field. The introductory lectures will be followed by presentations on selected topics, with the goal of connecting the core material to examples of cutting-edge research. Each day will involve lab tours of nearby facilities, including the world famous Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab.

Job Openings at PFG Precision Optics

Hi Students - see this email we received:

Good Morning Dr. Saleh:

My name is Kelly Tillis and I am with PFG Optics in Ocean Springs, MS. I found your contact information on the University’s website in hopes that you will be able to assist us in filling some open positions. We currently have four engineering positions to fill—two in manufacturing and two in sales (sales engineer). We have been in the optics manufacturing business for nearly 40 years on the MS Gulf Coast, and given our local roots, we wanted to continue to hire local engineering talent. We are having a difficult time filling these roles, as we want individuals that meet our needs, but also have a strong likelihood of staying here. I am trying to reach out to MS and surrounding area colleges to increase our chances of locating some talented individuals.

I just posted the two openings on the career center’s job board today, but I wanted to go ahead and reach out to you, since you are the Dean of the College of Optics and Photonics, to see if there was anyone you would recommend or if there are ways for you to publicize this opening further within the college, so it reaches more relevant students.

I have attached both job summaries in this email, so you have a few more details about the positions. I would be happy to answer any questions you have or that the students have about our company or openings. I can be contacted directly via email at hr@pfgoptics.com. Thank you for taking the time to look through this email and for any assistance you can provide in helping us fill these roles!

Regards,
Kelly Tillis
