Optical Engineering Internship at MIT
My name is Emma Landsiedel and I am a Technical Staff member
and Student Intern Coordinator in the Optical Engineering Group at MIT Lincoln
Laboratory in Massachusetts. Our group here is seeking student candidates
for optical engineering internships for the summer of 2022. If the
current trends hold, we are excited to host student interns in-person at our
Lexington, MA site.
To give some background on who we are, MIT Lincoln
Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) which
conducts groundbreaking R&D to solve problems that are critical not only to
national security, but to the advancement of science itself. The
Optical Engineering group I represent is a specialized group of about 35 Optical Engineers and Optical
Specialists/Technicians. We collaborate with Mission Divisions across the
Laboratory taking cutting-edge concepts and applying all aspects of the optical
engineering discipline to the development of prototype satellite, airborne,
underwater and terrestrial optical systems.
A summer intern in the Optical
Engineering Group will gain real-world experience working with staff members on
a broad range of optical problems from system conceptual design, ray tracing
and tolerance analysis, specification and oversight of optical component
fabrication, and optical system alignment and testing.
Attached you will find a copy of
our Summer Intern Job Description with more details for the candidates we are
seeking. The link to apply online is here:
https://careers.ll.mit.edu/job/Lexington-Group-78-Summer-Research-Program-Intern-Optical-Engineer-MA-02420/804347700/
. I am hoping you can distribute this to your students and those who
might be interested in an optical engineering internship. We will
consider applications submitted before November 15th.
One important note to highlight (also stated in the job description), is
that we can only interview and host U.S. citizens.
Given that this is our first
correspondence, we would also be happy to entertain a phone or video call with
your optics department representatives so that we can provide more information
on who we are and what kind of work we perform in our Optical Engineering
group. Additionally, here is a link to the MIT Lincoln Laboratory career
page (which can also direct you to the MIT LL external site for more
information): http://www.ll.mit.edu/careers
I have cc’d two other Optical Engineers and Student Intern
Coordinators in our group (Zach Darling and Michael Dalpiaz), so that any
one of us may respond promptly.
Thank you for your time,
Emma Landsiedel
