Portraits

From Amy Perry:

Hi!  I have scheduled a photo session for Tuesday, Feb 2, 11 am to 2:00 pm.  Below is the location.

Classroom Bldg. I, Room 202,
The Faculty Multimedia Center
Photographer - Jon Findell

Please forward this note on to the other students that were interested having a portrait taken.

The photographer is really easy to work with so I suggest that you look at the photo right after he takes it and let him know your personal favorite.  J

Once I have the files from the photographer, I will post on the web, for those currently listed, and send to the student directly.

Thank you!

Office of Undergraduate Research 2016 Showcase

The 2016 UCF Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence is currently accepting applications from students working with faculty on research and creative projects. This poster showcase is an opportunity for students to present their work to the UCF community. Scholarships will be provided to outstanding presentations judged by UCF faculty.

The deadline to submit an application, including a poster abstract, is February 12th at 1pm. The Showcase will be held on April 7 from 1:00-4:00pm in the UCF Student Union.

We will be holding a workshop, “Write an Abstract and Get Ready to Present” to help students through the process of applying to and preparing for the Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence. This workshop will be held twice in early February:
·         February 3, 12:00pm-1:00pm (SU 221)
·         February 4, 2:00pm-3:00pm (SU 221)

To learn more about the Showcase, and to apply, please visit: http://showcase.ucf.edu.

Internship in Jena, Germany

We would like to kindly ask you for support to find students who want to do an internship in Jena next summer:
RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North American and British universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions.
  • DAAD provides students a monthly stipend for three months to help cover living expenses
  • Host universities and institutes provide housing assistance and match students with Ph.D. student mentors
  • German language is not required and the working language will be in English
RISE stands for Research Internships in Science and Engineering. RISE Germany is funded by the German Federal Office.

Our PhD students from the GRK 2101 (http://www.asp.uni-jena.de/IRTG2101_research_program.html) are offering several topics for internships (available after login).
We would be very grateful if you could inform your students about that opportunity. (Applicants are required to have completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree program by the time of the internship.)

And the online application system for our Master’s degree program is open again. If you have interested students we would be grateful, if you could inform them.

Thank you very much!
Kindest regards,
Dorit

Lockheed Martin Undergraduate Research Opportunity

See this announcement - they are still awaiting final funding approvals from Lockheed, but they want to get started on recruiting should the funding come through.  This is a great opportunity!  Undergraduates who participate will be evaluated by Lockheed Martin for potential job postions in photonics.

Call for CREOL Undergraduate Researchers

A research project entitled “Evaluation of the optical and mechanical properties of chalcogenide fiber” is planned for the Spring 2016 semester at CREOL.  Lockheed Martin is funding a program led by Dr Kenneth L Schepler to evaluate the state of the art in chalcogenide fiber durability.  Chalcogenide glass fibers will be tested for their ability to transport high-power infrared laser beams.  We will measure beam transmission and beam quality as a function of input power in chalcogenide fibers made commercially and at CREOL.
Students interested in applying for up to two undergraduate research positions should meet the following requirements:
·         Successfully completed OSE 4520/OSE 4520L Laser Engineering by the end of Fall 2015 semester
·         UCF GPA of 3.0 or higher
·         Full-time student working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Photonic Science and Engineering
·         Provide CREOL faculty reference
Students will be expected to work 10 hours per week for 17 weeks beginning Spring 2016 semester.  Work will be overseen by CREOL faculty and graduate students.  Final briefings will be given by students to Lockheed Martin representatives interested in potential new hires.
Return all information by Nov. 30, 2015 to Mike McKee at mmckee@creol.ucf.edu
